how can I use a preloaded pattern as a background for my pictures?

Am I an idiot...? I don't see the answers to this and am looking for backgrounds (like a photographer's background) as well....???

yeah just go to layer>new fill layer>pattern the pick out the pattern and wallaa it should show up
