Elements 6 and 7

Hi could someone advise me how to change a background in plain colours , when I use gradient it is never a plain colour background , I have over time made up a file of backgrounds which is on my computer is there anyway that I could use them instead of using the gradient tool and how , thanks I just want to change a background into a plain background .
